Repurposed Silverware Chest

A friend brought this silverware chest to me with the idea of repurposing it into an Art Supply Organizer. She left the transformation details up to me.

BEFORE
Repurposed Art Supply Organizer

This begins the Repurposed Silverware Chest turned Art Supply Organizer.

Keeping in mind that this project was for her son I could really see the silverware chest repurposed in a black and metallic pewter paint combination. I knew it would also need a change in hardware to a more modern and masculine style.

Interior of Drawer

All the drawers were originally lined with flannel so no change was needed inside of the drawers other than removing the silverware holders.

Supplies Used

  • TSP for cleaning dirt and oils off surface
  • sandpaper (several different grits)
  • General Finishes Lamp Black
  • Modern Masters Metallic Pewter
  • General Finishes High Performance semi-gloss
  • Hardware (sourced online)

After removing all the hardware I thoroughly washed the outside with TSP and let it dry overnight. A light sanding was all that was needed to be ready for paint. The cabinet and drawers were painted with 2 coats of GF Lamp Black, allowing for dry time between coats.

Close up

The base and legs were painted with 2 coats of MM Metallic Pewter, also allowing for dry time after each coat. Then for added durability I applied 2 coats of GF High Perf semi-gloss over the entire cabinet.

Repurposed Art Supply Organizer

By using two contrasting colors of paint the details of the base stand out from the chest, giving the impression that it is two separate pieces stacked together. The project was finished with the addition of new brushed nickel knobs and handles so that the cabinet could be easily moved. The transformation from silverware chest to Art Supply Organizer is complete.
