What can you do with an old sewing cabinet when it no longer holds a sewing machine? It could be just a nice table to hold a lamp or it could be much more! A useful purpose, that’s what this table got, come and see!
Time and exposure to the elements had taken the beauty from this cabinet. It did have a nice big swing door so I thought if it had a shelf it could be used to keep your favorite reading material or catch your keys and mail when you came in the door. So with a little modification to the door hinges I was able to add the shelf and a new use for this old cabinet.
Products used:
- TSP degreaser
- Sand paper 80 to 320 grit
- Minwax Varathane Ultimate Poly Satin
- General Finishes Milk Paint – Basil
- Fusion Antique Glaze
- Annie Sloan Gilding Wax Warm Gold
With the shelf completed I went to work on finishing the cabinet. I lightly sanded everything to remove any flaking old finish and washed with TSP. The top was pretty as it was with the weathered aged wood so I just finished it with clear coat.
Painting makes such a big change in the look of the piece, it’s the fun and rewarding part of the project. I painted two coats of the basil allowing time for each to dry. I glazed the whole piece with antique glaze to bring out the trim details and to give depth to the basil paint. The cabinet was finished with three coats of poly to seal the glaze and protect the cabinet. The original hardware was used with highlights of gilding wax to make the hardware sparkle.
