I couldn’t pass up this pair of classic styled walnut wood tables and I thought they were the perfect pieces for a Natural Sanded Finish. Although they were pretty, the dark stained wood was scratched and had water damage on the tops. My plan was to uncover the beauty in the natural wood tops by careful sanding to reveal the wood grain and to paint the bases in a complimentary neutral color.
After a good wash with TSP I used an orbital sander with 220 grit paper to sand the old finish off.
My goal was to remove the old finish from the top but leave enough of the dark stain behind to highlight the grain of the wood. This revealed some unusual and beautiful wood grain patterns.
Supplies Used
- TSP (degreaser)
- Orbital sander and 220 grit paper
- General Finishes Flat out Flat
- General Finishes Milk Paint Alabaster
- Dixie Belle Grunge Wax
I finished both table tops with this method and clear coated them with a matte finish to keep the natural look to the wood.
This natural sanded finish benefits from the previous stained finish to reveal interesting patterns and swirls in the natural wood grain.
